One of the most frequently asked questions by dog owners is, "Why does my dog eat its own poop?"
As snow recedes from our yards and uncovers several months' worth of feces, this is a good time to discuss this topic.
Eating stool or coprophagia can be a normal behavior in the animal kingdom. Some species eat feces of other animals to gather nutrients that may be left behind. Dogs in the wild may eat feces for this purpose.
There are many products available that claim to prevent this behavior. I have not found any over the counter anti-coprophagia products that work.
The best way to prevent your pet from eating its own poop is to make sure that you pick up feces left behind. In other words, do not give your dog the opportunity to find and eat feces.
